Class of 2008 – Josh Thomas

Josh Thomas, 18, of Fremont, bowled his first 300 game on Oct. 16 while bowling
in the Thursday Night Mens League at Fremont Lanes. Thomas is one of the youngest

Class of 2001 – Brandon Vandelaar

Brandon Vandelaar of Fremont recently graduated with highest distinction from Ferris
State University, with a Master of Business Administration degree, majoring in Business
Administration and a certificate in Advanced Study Management Tools and Techniques.

Class of 2006 – Jordan Matthews

Matthews receives college soccer award

Albion College head men’s soccer coach Jerry Block has announced his team’s
letterwinners for the 2008 season. Jordan Matthews, the son of Christopher Matthews
and Jean Matthews of Fremont, will receive a plaque designating his third-year award.

The Britons fielded a young team (13 of the letterwinners were first-year players
or sophomores) and tied for third in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association
with an 8-6 league record. Albion’s overall record was 9-9-1.

Jordan Matthews, a graduate of Fremont High School, played in the midfield in 18
matches. He dished out three assists. Picture

on Dec. 6. He received a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Integrated Science

Class of 1993 – Patrick Richardson

Patrick Richardson, a 1993 graduate of Fremont High School, recently graduated magna
cum laude from Grand Valley State University, receiving a Master of Science degree
in Biostatistics. He is employed as a biostatistician at the Van Andel Institute
in the Program of Translational Medicine. Patrick lives in Grand Rapids with his
wife, Kelly and four-year-old son, Alex.

Class of 2008 – Emily Scheffler receives CMU’s Centralis award

Emily Scheffler of Fremont is attending Central Michigan University on a Centralis
Scholar Award and is part of CMU’s Honors Program.

A local student recently began her college career on a positive note, receiving
one of Central Michigan University’s most presti gious scholarships and join
ing the university’s Honors Program.

Emily Scheffler of Fremont is attending CMU on a Centralis Scholar Award, which
covers four years of tuition, room and board, and books. Scheffler, a 2008 graduate
of Fremont High School, is the daugh ter of Elsie Manning of Fremont and John Scheffler
of Shelby.

During their first semester at CMU, Scheffler and her fellow scholarship recipients
have become engaged in the community, conducting a silent auction that raised $2,700
for the American Red Cross Mobile Food Pantry of Isabella County.

In high school, Scheffler was involved in National Honor Society, quiz bowl and
Student Council. She was a nationally-recog nized member of PRIDE of Newaygo County.
She is also the reigning National Baby Food Festival Queen.

High school seniors who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher
and have demon strated strong extracurricu lar involvement are eligible to apply
for the merit-based scholarships. As part of the application process, students also
visit the CMU campus for a half-day to participate in information sessions and an
essay competition.

Each year, 20 students receive Centralis Scholar Awards, while another 20 students
receive Centralis Gold Awards, which cover four years of tuition.

Recipients of the scholar ships follow a protocol in which they enroll in Honors
courses and seminars, acquire foreign language skills, perform community service,
complete an Honors Senior Research Project in their major field of study, receive
personal faculty mentoring, and receive Honors academic advis ing. Centralis freshmen
live in Larzelere Hall, CMU’s Honors residence.

Class of 2007 Alumnus James Hindes Flies High in Professional Wakeboarding

James Hindes of Fremont has had an eventful year as a rookie professional wakeboarder.

Class of 2008 Alumnus Joseph A. Booker – Rreceives Air Force ROTC College Scholarship

Joseph A. Booker has received an Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) college scholarship offer to attend a selected host college or university.

The cadet was selected to receive the scholarship certificate on the basis of comprehensive tests, high school scholastic achievement, and extra-curricular activities. The majority of Air Force ROTC scholarships cover full college/ university tuition, provide textbook allowance, and pay most laboratory or incidental fees. In addition, at least a $300 tax-free monthly allowance is paid to recipients during the academic year. The estimated value of the scholarship depends on the student’s choice of school and type of scholarship offered.

Upon graduation from college and completion of the ROTC program, the cadet will receive a bachelor’s degree and a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force.

He is the son of Dan and step-son of Sue Booker of Newaygo, and is a 2008 graduate of Fremont High School.
